MCED Award for Innovative Contributions to
Ecological Modelling

This year again a high number of high number of very excellent applications dealing with a wide set of modelling approaches and a multitude of research topics reached us. The jury consisting of the book editors, representatives of the Young Modellers and the President of the Ecological Society of Germany, Austria and Switzerland (GfÖ) evaluated all applications according to novelty of the approach, contribution to ecology and ecological theory and bridging the gap between science and application.

In a close decision the jury finally decided to award two 1st prizes in 2018 reflecting the broadness of excellent modelling approaches.

PhDs and Postdocs

1st Prize:

Richard Barnes, University of California, Berkely together with Adam Thomas Clark, University of Minnesota, Saint Paul, Minnesota (currently at German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) in Leipzig, Germany).
Topic: Modelling interaction of geologic, ecologic, and evolutionary processes to analyse distribution and evolutionary trajectories of plethodontid salamander evolution

1st Prize:

Zhen Yu, Iowa State University, USA
Topic: Impacts of land use and cover change and agricultural management on regional and global carbon dynamics
